1984 Lincoln Mark VII - Introduced November 10, 1983, styling on the all new
"contemporary size premium" Lincoln retained traditional Mark cues,
but on a dramatically different form. Aerodynamic appearance include aero
headlamps, a wedge profile, and sloping back window. Lincoln described the new
Mark as "the most air flow efficient luxury car built in America with a
drag coefficient of 0.38." This edition was over a foot shorter than the
Mark VI, mounted on the same chassis as the Continental sedan (downsized some
two years earlier). Some observers compared Mark VII's new design to Ford
Thunderbird (logically enough) and even to Mercedes 380SEC. Mark had
electronic
air suspension with automatic three-way level control, nitra-cusion
gas-pressurized front struts and rear shocks, and four wheel power disc
brakes. An all-new cockpit-style instrument panel had full electronics. The
full length floor console with gear shift lever included a lockable storage
bin in the armrest, while an overhead console held
warning lights and dual intensity courtesy/reading lamps. Base engine was the
302 cid (5.0 liter) V-8 with EFI and EEC-IV, hooked up to a four-speed
automatic overdrive transmission. MarkVII could also be ordered with a new
inline turbo diesel with dual exhaust, supplied by BMW-Steyr (but the V-8 came
with two catalytic converters, a Y-pipe
and only one muffler). Power rack-and-pinion steering replaced the old circulative-ball
system. The modern Mark had integrated, flush-mounted aero headlamps that
extended well back onto the fenders to form marker lenses; a sharply sloped
windshield; wide color-keyed lower body side moldings; bright wheel lip and
belt moldings; and large early-triangular quarter windows. Full-length upper body side
dual-band paint stripes were standard. The traditional deck lid bulge, shaped
as a simulated spare tire housing, was back again. So was an upright grille
made up of thin vertical bars. Diesel models had a `Turbo Diesel' badge on the
deck lid. Eleven new paint colors and six new interior trim colors were
available. Standard equipment included front and rear stabilizer bars,
tilt steering, speed control, power windows and door locks, locking (latching)
gas door with remote release; electric rear defroster, and duel electric
remote control mirrors. Also standard: tinted upper windshield, automatic
temperature air conditioning, six way power driver's seat, electronic AM/FM
stereo search radio, and P215/70R15 whitewall tires on
cast aluminum wheels with center hub ornament. New options included heated
driver and passenger seats, a compass/thermometer group for the header,
handling package, and portable CB radio. Aimed at the European luxury coupe
market, the new LSC series had a
standard handling package and 3.27:1 axle ratio. LSC had quicker ratio power
steering, high performance, P215/65R15 tires on six inch aluminum wheels, dark
charcoal lower body side paint, fog lamps, and leather upholstery. There was
also a new Versace Designer Series, as well as the popular Bill Blass Designer
Series. This year's Bill Blass came in dual-shade clearcoat metallic paint:
Goldenrod Glamour with Harvest Wheat. Exterior trim included two-tone
cream/dark green body side and deck lid accent stripes, along with the
designer's signature in the quarter window and Bill Blass logo on the deck lid.
Upholstery
was standard two-tone flax and gold ultra-soft leather (or cloth trim at no
extra charge). The dash held a Bill Blass logo. Emanating from Gianni Versace
of Milan, Italy (a designer of avant-garde clothing), the Mark Versace had a
walnut glamour clearcoat metallic body with two-tone tan/bright blue accent
stripes on body side and deck lid, and tan stripes on the hood. Also included:
a signature in the quarter panel window, and Versace logo on the instrument
panel. Desert Tan ultra-soft leather went inside, in designer's sew style.
Cloth inserts with leather bolster seat trim were available at no extra cost.
